Overview
If you suffer from a neurological condition (e.g. multiple sclerosis, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury, cauda equina syndrome) and are experiencing bothersome urinary symptoms or infections, you could be suffering from a neurogenic bladder. This condition can put your kidneys at risk of kidney failure, and requires a comprehensive assessment and specialist treatment. Mr Malde is an expert in the full range of treatments for this condition.
Symptoms of a neurogenic bladder
Neurogenic bladder occurs when brain, spinal cord, or nerve damage disrupts normal bladder control. Symptoms depend on the level of injury. This can make your bladder either too active (resulting in increased urinary frequency, sudden urge to pass urine and incontinence) or too weak (resulting in difficulty emptying the bladder, weak flow, and having to strain to pass urine). If not managed, it can lead to kidney damage over time.
Diagnosis and tests for a neurogenic bladder
Diagnosing a neurogenic bladder starts with a detailed medical history and neurological examination. Mr Malde may recommend:
- Urine Tests: To rule out infections or other issues.
- Bladder Diary: Tracking your fluid intake and urination patterns.
- Ultrasound scan: To assess your kidney function
- Advanced urodynamic Tests: Measuring bladder pressure and function, including bladder emptying tests
In private healthcare, these diagnostics are often available quickly, without long waiting lists, ensuring prompt care in London.
