Overview
If you’re experiencing urinary symptoms of infections following previous surgery or radiotherapy, you could be suffering from more complex urinary tract problems. These include urinary tract fistula, strictures and urethral diverticulum, all of which require detailed specialist assessment. Mr Malde offers a wide range of specialist, state-of-the-art treatments for these conditions in a private setting in London.
What is a urinary tract fistula and how is it treated?
A urinary tract fistula is an abnormal connection (tract or tunnel) between the urinary system and another organ or the skin. This allows urine to leak into unintended areas, causing incontinence, infections, or tissue damage. The commonest type of urinary tract fistula is known as a Vesico-vaginal fistula, or VVF. This is a distressing condition where a tract forms between the bladder and vagina, leading to constant urine leakage. It may result from surgery, trauma, or childbirth complications. Mr Malde offers detailed imaging and cystoscopy to define the fistula and provides reconstructive surgery, using minimally invasive techniques to restore continence and quality of life. He is one of the few surgeons in the UK who is experienced in vaginal and robotic approaches to treat this condition.
What is a urethral diverticulum and how is it treated?
A urethral diverticulum is a pouch-like outpouching from the urethra that can cause recurrent infections, painful urination, urethral pain or a vaginal mass. Due to the difficulty in identifying tis condition, it may con undiagnosed for years. Mr Malde offers MRI and cystoscopic evaluation to confirm the diagnosis and provides expert surgical management where needed, ensuring preservation of continence and function.
What is a ureteric stricture and how is it treated?
A ureteric stricture is a narrowing of the ureter (the tube that carries urine from kidney to bladder) due to scar tissue, leading to obstruction of urine flow. Ureteric strictures often result from previous injury during gynaecological or abdominal surgery, and if untreated may lead to urine leakage, kidney obstruction, or pain. Mr Malde provides urgent and elective care for ureteric trauma, using imaging such as CT urogram or retrograde studies, followed by minimally invasive reconstructive procedures, including robotic ureteric reimplantation.
